Health Plan of San Joaquin | Focus Your Health | Summer 2022

Summer 2022 Focus Your Health Standard U.S. Postage PAID Walla Walla, WA Permit No. 44 Before the summer ends, make sure to add a wellness visit to your to-do list. Schedule your child’s annual well-child ap- pointment early, and get in for those well-child checks your child needs before the school year starts. This might be a well-child visit. Or—if your child is an athlete—it might be a sports physical. In either case, it’s the only visit many kids and teens have with their doctor each year. That’s why it’s so important. The doctor can give your child a physical exam and check for any hidden health problems. At these visits, you’ll go over: Vaccines. Childhood vaccines help keep your child safe from 14 differ- ent diseases, some lifethreatening. And kids don’t outgrow their need for them. Even preteens and teens need vaccines. Developmental screenings. What’s a healthy weight for your child? How can you help them eat better or exercise more? What’s the best way to discourage your child from smoking or help them cope with peer pressure? Any questions you have are important. And as long as you speak up, your child’s doctor will guide you. 2 Focus Your Health Have a safe summer There are lots of ways to stay cool this summer, but the coolest thing you can do is stay safe. Warm weather means we’re spending more time outside and doing more activities. This could lead to more accidents if we are not careful. Here are some sugges- tions on how to keep yourself and your family safe: Secure home windows. Every year thousands of kids in the U.S. are killed or injured in falls fromwindows. Opening the windows is a must if you don’t have air condition- ing. You can’t depend on screens to keep children safe. It is important to install window guards or window stops—especially on bedroom windows. You can buy them online or at hardware stores. Keep furni- ture away fromwindows to discourage kids from climbing near them. Update helmets. Kids would live on their bikes during the summer if you let them. Before yours hop on theirs, make sure they’re wearing a well-fitted helmet. This is important for the whole family. Helmets help reduce the risk of head injury and death from bicycle crashes. Helmets are also a good idea when skateboarding, batting or running bases in baseball or softball, or skating. Watch out for heatstroke. As the temperature rises, so does the risk of a heat-related illness. The most serious one is heatstroke. Signs of heatstroke include: 1. Body temperature of 103 degrees F or higher 2. Hot, red, dry or damp skin 3. A rapid and strong pulse 4. Possible unconsciousness Call 911 immediately if you think someone has heatstroke. Move the person to a cooler environment, and try to bring their temperature down with cool cloths or a bath. Do not give the person fluids. Water safety. Did you know that drowning remains one of the leading causes of preventable deaths for children in the U.S., with nearly 800 deaths each year? Help us change this and make the water a safe place for your kids to play. Here are some things you can do this summer: ● Never swim in canals. It is not worth the risk. ● Watch kids when they are in or around water, without being distracted. Keep young children within arm’s reach of an adult. Make sure older children swimwith a partner every time. ● Teach children how to swim. Every child is different, so enroll children in swim lessons when they are ready. Consider their age, development and how often they are around water. ● Install fences around home pools. A pool fence should sur- round all sides of the pool and be at least 4 feet tall with self- closing and self-latching gates. ● Empty kids’ pools after each use. Store them upside down so they don’t collect water. ● Know what to do in an emergency. Learning CPR and basic water rescue skills may help you save a child’s life. 12 Focus Your Health Age Recommended tests 18 BLOOD PRESSURE. Be screened every 3 to 5 years; every year starting at age 40. 20 CHOLESTEROL. Be screened every 4 to 6 years; more often if at high risk of heart attack or stroke. 45 COLORECTAL CANCER. Talk with your doctor about screening options. DIABETES. Be screened at least every 3 years (or start earlier based on risk factors). 50 LUNG CANCER. Be screened yearly based on your history of smoking. 55 PROSTATE CANCER. Ask your doctor about screening. 65 ABDOMINAL AORTIC ANEURYSM. Be screened once between ages 65 and 75 if you’ve ever smoked. MEN WHEN TO START KEY SCREENINGS Men’s health happens year-round! You are busy taking care of things—but don’t forget to take care of yourself! It’s not just about feeling your best—although that’s a great reason to do it. Taking care of your health can also help ensure that you’ll be around in the future to take care of your loved ones. Whether that’s a parent, a partner or a child, being there for them matters. It’s never too late to make your health a priority. Here are six smart things men can do now: 1. Schedule a checkup. You don’t need to be sick to visit your doctor. A checkup gives you a chance to learn more about your health and what steps you should be taking. You can also get advice about topics like fitness, alcohol, smoking and sexual health. 2. Say yes to screening tests. Screenings look for signs of serious diseases, like cancer and heart disease, before symptoms appear. That’s usually when they are easiest to treat. Your doctor can tell you what tests are best for you. 3. Get your shots. Adults need vaccines for things like tetanus, shingles and the flu. Staying up-to-date can help keep you from getting sick. 4. Quit risky habits. Ask your doctor for help quitting smoking, drinking or using drugs. It’s not a matter of willpower. There are treatments that can help. 5. Step on the scale. Eating well and staying active can help you manage your weight. And that, in turn, can help lower your risk for problems like diabe- tes and heart disease. 6. Manage your mental health. If you feel stressed, anxious or depressed, tell your doctor about it. There’s no shame in asking for help— and treatment works.
